What are Motor-Generators?
They are machines consisting of an electrical generator which is driven by an electric motor, unlike a conventional electrical generator that is turned by a stream turbine or internal combustion engine.
What are they used for?
To convert the frequency, voltage, or phase of electrical power.
- To isolate electrical loads from the electrical power supply line.
- The eliminate spikes and variations in large power supplies.
- To provide phase matching between different electrical system.
Large motor–generators were widely used to convert industrial amounts of power while smaller motor–generators were used to convert battery power to higher DC voltages.
